Water of the Doves

It was a place that the Germans and the Americans were not going to destroy. They did so in any case. Maybe not the first on anyone’s list of things to do, but rebuilding Monte Cassino started after the war and was completed in 1964. That seems pretty remarkable given all the devastation just in Italy resulting from World War II. The Americans bombed the hell out of the place, mistakenly thinking the Germans were using the Abbey for military purposes. It is lovely.
