Santa Maria in Traspontina
$5.00 – $350.00
Setting the Wikipedia history below aside for a moment. I remember walking the Via della Conciliazione past this bell tower in 2004 as we walked to St. Peter’s from our hotel. I found it striking then, and every time I’ve seen it since.
Santa Maria in Traspontina (or Transpontina) is a Carmelite church in Rome, Italy. The shrine lies on the Via della Conciliazione, the main road of the Rione Borgo.
The church was established as a cardinalitial titulus by Pope Sixtus V on 13 April 1587.[1] The current Cardinal of Santa Maria in Traspontina is the former Archbishop of Quebec, Marc Ouellet, a supporter of Opus Dei,[2] who is now the Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops in the Roman Curia. (He was Cardinal Priest from 2003 to 2018, and continued there when co-opted to suburbicarian rank.) (Wikipedia, 2019)
