Holland

Holland State Park is to the north of the city of Holland, a few miles along the Lake Michigan shore. The park lies on the north bank of Lake Macatawa. My son needed to attend a ‘soon to be a student at Hope College’ meeting in late March of 2003. There was some time to kill, so we went out to the beach. Parking was effortless that day. From the weather reports, it would seem that if it snows anywhere in Michigan, it snows on the west coast. That day it was clear, bright, beautiful, and cold. Stephen walked out on the breakwater, and I didn’t. I’ve been to Holland State Park a fair number of times over the years. This day held all the brightness of summer amid winter’s desolation.
