I did not want to be an American or an American Tourist – worse. In that regard, I had never walked back into the rear of the Piazza della Rocca as I did not want to invade into what might be private spaces. In the third year, I could no longer resist, so I did not. No one was there, nor could I ascertain that anyone was inside any of these obviously lived in residences. I thus could retain my dignity and a feeling of having done nothing that might cause comment from the locals.
